What not to do:

The first thing to understand is that over the counter baits and sprays are not your friend.  Most of the time they kill a very small percentage of ants and drive away the rest, making it seem like they worked to get rid of carpenter ants, but masking what is really going on in your home and making real control more difficult.

Most people only notice ants in their home in the springtime. That's when they come into your living areas looking for food - because their preferred food sources are not available yet.  Ants eat other insects and insect secretions.

When the weather warms up enough, usually between 2 to 5 weeks after you start seeing the ants, they 'seem' to disappear. Any type of treatment seems to work. Yay - you got rid of carpenter ants ...not.

What they really do, is reconnect with and re-establish their normal feeding trails on the exterior, outside your home.  They do not move out of your home.  You still have a nest.  It is still getting bigger.  If they are an ant that causes damage to your home - like Carpenter Ants - they are still causing damage.

First step:  Ant Identification.

To get rid of carpenter ants - you need to know that you really do have carpenter ants.  No one type of treatment works for all kinds of ants. You need to know what kind of ant you are dealing with. Treatment materials, treatment techniques, and/or prevention measures can differ greatly depending on which ant you are dealing with.

Our page ant identification, will help you find out which ant you are dealing with and will have information on how to get rid of that particular ant.

Second step: Understanding your problem.

If you are seeing ants, you have an infestation.  For many types of ants, especially carpenter ants, as little as 1% leave the nest to look for food. The ants you see walking around are foragers, out searching for food. They leave the family home, the kids, the pets, and the 'significant other' just like you would like to, and go to the store to do the shopping for everyone. This means that the problem you are dealing with is much larger than the number of ants you see.

Carpenter ants nest in walls, attics, and sub areas.  They nest in the ground under your home, and in all kinds of hidden areas.  The carpenter ants you see have a nest somewhere.  This nest is in, on, or under your home.  There may be more than one.  It is almost always related to ant nests outside your home. In fact, with carpenter ants, your nest is usually just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
